“Within the pages of this novel, Trigiani’s 10th, is a gloriously romantic yet sensible world that seamlessly blends practicality and beauty…built around the staggering cultural and social changes the war years swept in…. Trigiani’s very best…exquisite writing and a story enriched by the power of abiding love.” (USA Today)“I’ve always loved reading Trigiani, but [this] is something totally new and completely wonderful: a rich, sweeping epic which tells the story of the women and men who built America dream by dream. If you’re meeting her work for the first time, get ready for a lifelong love affair. Splendid.” (Kathryn Stockett, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Help)“The breathtaking… historical novel sparkles in exquisite details and vivid descriptions.” (Huffington Post)“[A] great read….Bella.” (People)“Pure pleasure . . . full-bodied and elegantly written.” (Washington Post Book World)“You’ll have trouble putting this novel down.” (Richmond Times-Dispatch)“The novel is a sweeping epic, but at its heart, it’s a love story. It speaks to an era of possibilities.” (Providence Journal)“Trigiani’s page-turning newest… is a sweeping saga… More than an epic romance, Trigiani’s work pays homage to the tribulations of the immigrant experience, and the love that makes the journey and hardships worthwhile.” (Publishers Weekly)“This expansive epic, which seems tailor-made for a miniseries, manages to feel both old-fashioned and thoroughly contemporary…[an] irresistible love story.” (Booklist)“Trigiani’s gift for using vivid details to create a strong sense of place and her warm affection for her characters will make this a satisfying read for her many fans.” (Library Journal) The fateful first meeting of Enza and Ciro takes place amid the haunting majesty of the Italian Alps at the turn of the last century. Still teenagers, they are separated when Ciro is banished from his village and sent to hide in New York's Little Italy, apprenticed to a shoemaker, leaving a bereft Enza behind. But when her own family faces disaster, she, too, is forced to emigrate to America. Though destiny will reunite the star-crossed lovers, it will, just as abruptly, separate them once again—sending Ciro off to serve in World War I, while Enza is drawn into the glamorous world of the opera . . . and into the life of the international singing sensation Enrico Caruso. Still, Enza and Ciro have been touched by fate—and, ultimately, the power of their love will change their lives forever.A riveting historical epic of love and family, war and loss, risk and destiny, inspired by the author's own family history, The Shoemaker's Wife is the novel Adriana Trigiani was born to write.

Beloved New York Times bestselling author Adriana Trigiani returns with the most epic and ambitious novel of her career—a breathtaking multigenerational love story that spans two continents, two World Wars, and the quest of two star-crossed lovers to find each other again. The Shoemaker's Wife is replete with the all the page-turning adventure, sumptuous detail, and heart-stopping romance that has made Adriana Trigiani, “one of the reigning queens of women’s fiction” (USA Today). Fans of Trigiani’s sweeping family dramas like Big Stone Gap and Lucia, Lucia will love her latest masterpiece, a book Kathryn Stockett, author of The Help, calls “totally new and completely wonderful: a rich, sweeping epic which tells the story of the women and men who built America dream by dream.”

I would not pass this one along. Was disappointed in this Trigiani novel.Loved her others, but this one spent too much time on describing surroundings, clothing and other things that contribute but do not make up a novel (unless you are Colm Toibin) and not enough time on plot. The expanse of the story was immense and the plot moved with both excruciating slowness and super speed sporting huge gaps. The last 1/4 of the book read like a plot outline instead of a story. The title gave away the one thing that pulled me along, and then wasn't really about her at all after she became the Shoemaker's wife. It was about all sorts of adjunct characters. The first part in Italy was lovely, and the next part in New York had some shining moments, but on the whole, I would not pass this one along to a friend. Still love this writer, but not this book.Lovely story about turn of the century immigrants This was a lovely story. It follows the story of two Italian immigrants, who initially immigrate under somewhat dire circumstances, a build beautiful lives alongside friends that become adopted family, and eventually their own family. There is heartbreak and joy, good times and hard times. Some parts will leave you sniffly. One thing that was a bit irksome about this book is that there are some discrepancies that (in my opinion) should have been picked up in editing. Like the difference between the Balkans and the Baltic (i.e. the Serbian girls that the author refers to as "Baltic beauties", it should be "Balkan beauties"); the questionably estimated travel time for trans-Atlantic ship travel, the fact that the author refers to the son as a Army soldier after describing him wearing a "crisp white uniform" (wouldn't that mean he was in the Navy? The Army doesn't wear dress whites) Just weird stuff like that.Other than the odd discrepancies, it was overall a heartwarming read.A GLORIOUS HEROINE!!! At the very heart of this family saga is Enza, the strong, determined, intelligent, loving, resourceful heroine, from the Italian alps. How could I not love this young girl of substance who remained true to her family and to herself as she blossomed into a woman that saw her skills as a seamstress raise her from indentured servitude to the expert costume maker to Enrico Caruso and others at the Met. Opera? But, it was Ciro Lazzari, the orphaned boy raised by nuns in those same alps, who had stolen her heart, when she was just fifteen, who caused Enza to leave that position (and a man who offered a life of pampering) for the dream of building a future and a family with him. This is not a lighthearted story. It is filled with the hardships and difficulties of life, and the grit and determination to overcome them. Horrible circumstances make for a dark read which is saved by the strength of hardworking, driven characters. The writing is beautiful and provides a glimpse into the lives of immigrants who flocked to the U. S., in hopes of a better life, during the early part of the 1900s through WWII. Thank you Adriana Trigani for a heart stirring read!
